A report on the Os Mutantes show: Webster Hall has even worse sound than Irving Plaza. Like being at a High School talent show. First, when you have a set of musicians as expert as OM, you do not need to pump the volume to Gwar levels. Who’s going to talk during a set by a band that hasn’t played more than once in 30 years, and never in NYC? Second, the soundboard is wedged up front and to the right of stage, making it impossible for the soundperson to know which mike to highlight. There was flute, but no one heard it. And third, it might be Os Mutantes fault that they brought six backing musicians they really didn’t need.

And one of the backing singers was a dead ringer for Rob Courdry of the Daily Show. Inexcusable.

But: they did the weird stuff, the popular stuff, and the sublime: Caetano Veloso’s “Baby,” and we didn’t miss Rita Lee at all, such quality was replacement Zelia Duncan. They were a blast. Especially after 4 glasses of Maker’s Mark and a some beers.

Nice article by John Hodgman in the NYTimes Mag about Asian horror and Raimi/Drake cultivating a genre revolution stateside; not sure why Hodgman didn’t at least throw in a sentence mentioning Japan’s recent, country-wide leaning toward ghost-fueled fiction and film (i.e. Haruki Murakami’s novels, and ghost-rife films outside the horror genre, like Miyazaki’s anime childrens’ fantasies). Some chalk it up to Shinto’s overall penchant for disembodied spirits, as a religion, but this time there’s something psychedelic about it all.

Large and surprising appreciation for Two Thousand, the new French Kicks rekkid. It’s a U2 record torn apart and put back together by younger people. Which means it’s u2 pre-1992, the year they all died in a bizarre chemical explosion involving a gold sequined jacket, Jesse Helms, and Anton Corbjin’s darkroom materials. Some might say the FKs trade on the Walkmen, but longer-time music geeks will tell you each band goes back as far as the other; it just took the FKs longer to match their disproportionate hype. They might be able to do this again, too, because they’ve worked so hard to get here. And, as usual with decent-sounding records: it’s the drums.

And sometimes a high, keening organ.

I can think of some fine records that do NOT have fine drums, but drums that are just along for the ride.   2. First of all, calling Grant Hart a bad drummer is just retarded. “She Floated Away” & “Books About UFOs,” for starters, and his signature fill-intro, mean everything. He made plenty of songs bearable despite Mould’s fatguy warble. REM needed Bill Berry to only stay out of the way, and he was great for knowing how to do that. But their best tracks are his best moments (one I love – think about how clean yet expressive he is). On their first album, he makes Radio Free Europe and Catapult danceable, which helps get them exposure. I danced to REM before I ever cared what Stipe was saying (and never really did, anyway).Buzzcocks had a drummer?Yo La Tengo has only made three decent records, all with Georgia Hubley’s playing at the fore — Painful, The Heart Beating as One whatever one, and May I Sing with Me. But mostly she plays maracas. Otherwise she should just sing. Teenage Fanclub’s drummer had the slow-wayback thing so well polished that no one realizes Pavement stole it. Sure, the rest was there, but without that, who listens?

Are you just thinking of some live video you saw of Fat Grant Hart, sweating and wheezing as he tried to sing and play drums at the same time (and he was still good, even though Bob had to fill in the blanks vocally as Grant caught his breath). Hart’s drumming is solid, expressive and influenced rather heavily by John Maher of …The Buzzcocks, another solid drummer with a skipping snare …

  8. I forgot about how bad Webster’s bar also is – a friend asked me if I wanted a beer, and being drunk, I asked if he’d grab me a water, and before I knew it, he’d paid five bucks (!) for a water. Any bar that doesn’t offer water free is shit, shit in a bag, shit in a suitcase, shit that deserves to be in the bar owner’s mouth.

On <>Chronic Town<>, he reigns in the self destructive chaos that should’ve killed the band. “Gardening at Night?”I’ll let J. Frank’s stand on most of the others hold, but have you ever even listened to Husker Du? Hart’s drumming is the thing that still makes me pull them out. Georgia on Yo La is problematic in places, but cue up “Sugar Cube” from <>I Can Feel The Heart…<> and tell me she’s crap. It can’t be done.

This was especially true for Nick Stumpf’s drumming, which closely mirrored Matt Barrick’s (also the Walkmen’s drummer). FK’s first couple EPs, made before they got all new waved out, sound a lot like JFE without the organ. I’m pretty sure members of FKs were high school friends of JFE/Walkmen members.

  14. Huh. thanks for the insights. You’re prob right about them all being HS buddies. I remember early French Kicks, and while it didn’t really sound to me like JFE, I can see your point, esp with the drums and the tempos, which were ahead of their time for those times. For me, JFE was much garage-ier than the FK, who from the get-go sounded like they wanted to write pop dance songs. JFE, who I saw in DC a couple times before they released those great EPs and around the time of their first, poorly recorded but swell first album (not the Sony disaster, but the rare as crap one with “My Baby Gave Me Lemonade” on it), seemed more a project for Lupton to spin his creepy poetry while the band worked out their Birthday Party-via-slowed-down-ska urges.
