Ever since he broke his goddamn neck

Jesus-fucking-C.

With Modern Times, Bob Dylan has inadvertently made a Leon Redbone album.

  1. The hell with Dylan–here’s something important: Do I want to spend $25 plus service charge to see X (the LA ones) and Henry Rollins on Wed? I can’t decide…

  2. From a very reliable source, X alone is worth every penny, but make sure to skip Henry – he’s sadly old to be doing that thing I never liked anyway … But X is the orig lineup, and they do a gazillion songs, all the best stuff, and when they’re in W’s (second) home state, you know they’ll be fired up … I’m a fan, I’d pay $25 to see them alone.

  3. Leon Redbone, at least in concert, is not bad. Very funny.Have you heard the new Dylan record? Is it a case of him getting more credit for not sucking? He had been mostly mediocre for 20 or 30 years previously … I read a pretty good Dylan sessions book by Clinton Heylin that mostly concluded the same thing, and Heylin is a huge fan. He has some good things to say about post-’60s Dylan, but not a whole lot. Also, if you read one Clash biography, read Passion is a Fashion. Last Gang in Town isn’t bad, but can’t measure up …

  4. You can find a few new tracks on the Hype Machine. I’ve heard about 4 — and it’s really Redbone. I don’t mean to slag Leon – in his early days, the joke was a funny and smart one — but I doubt rabid Dylan fans wanted him to sound like this. I really hate it so far. It’s limp. Definitely a case of Just Not Sucking, but maybe worse than that …

  5. X was fantastic. Great set list, tight. They were clearly having a blast playing and it carried over to the crowd. No “Burning House of Love” which was a bummer.Rollins made me want to stab myself with a butter knife. He’s still in great shape; I’ll give him that.

  6. I’m trying to find a setlist, because they did what I believe was a Big Boys cover, though I’d have to dust off some really old vinyl to be certain.
